Course Final Reflections

 Course Final Reflections

Throughout this course I have been tested on how I learn as a learner and how that can help me become a better teacher. This course has helped guide me in very practical ways that I can become and apply the things from this class as a teacher. I believe my favorite assignment was the Inquiry project. This is my favorite because of how it is my own and is not restricted in what I can learn and get out of it. It also is something that I can use and change and develop as I proceed to be a teacher.

This course has been a constant reminder to take my learning and make it for myself. I have never been part of a class where I am guided to finish and do assignments in ways that are directly valuable to me. I will be using these methods because I have been able to learn what they are, how they are beneficial, and how I can apply them to my teaching directly.

Reading and comprehension I have learned throughout this class is so much more than the act of reading and regurgitating the information. I have learned how it is different for each learner. Each individual has their own previous knowledge and their own unique viewpoint. It is not fair to teach in only one way and expect everyone to gain and learn from it. I have learned how to teach with each individual's learning needs taken into account and allow for their own creative process to happen. This class has helped me in my creative learning process journey that I hope to continue on.

PE Take Home Activities

PE Outside The Classroom

There is so much we learn as PE Teachers in school on how to be good quality teachers in the classroom. What I want to explore and share is how we can expand PE and provide good quality resources for our students to go home and explore with their families and friends.

One fun resource I like to use is Youtube Videos!

Here is an example of some that students can access at home. This particular video is done by a former Teacher here at UNM Holly Kowalski who is now teaching elementary school. With a lot of students doing school online these types of Brain Boost help students up and moving to improve circulation and stimulate brain activity.

My Passion Inquiry

Hello,

My name is Anastasia and I am finishing up my education at the University of New Mexico to become a Physical Education Teacher. My passion is to help children move their bodies so that they can become the best individual that they can be! I believe PE is one of the best tools we can use as teachers to create an environment where a child and young adult can discover their strengths and their passions so that they can apply those in every aspect of their lives.

I believe that PE should be more than just the inside of a gym for an hour a day. Physical education is the unicorn of education. For my Inquiry, I wanted to explore resources and lessons that can help students take home and explore with their families and community the benefits of PE.

I hope you enjoy the posts and information I share in the following Blogs and find some inspiration to begin moving.

Pedagogical ToolKit

 Pedagogical ToolKit

Social Dimension- Create a supportive learning environment

The goal in activities for the student in the social dimension is to create lessons that allow for the students to learn in a supportive environment. Activities will be chosen that is new to most students such as Pickle Ball or Can Jam. The students will then work together to develop the skills necessary to play the game moving into it slowly as the skills build.

Personal Dimension-  Foster confidence and persistence

The goal for personal dimension is to give students the ability to teach each other. They will pick a PE activity that is new to them and in groups discover how it is played. This will help them build confidence and take turns being leaders and building off what they already know and learning together.

Students will take the activity their group has decided to discover together and create a lesson to teach other groups the skill or game. This will help in leadership and the ability to verbalize and write down instructions that other students can follow.

Cognitive Dimension- Develop problem-solving strategies

To help students develop problem-solving strategies guided discovery is a good teaching method that can be used. As the teacher, I provide the students with enough instruction that they can start playing a game such as Flag football. Once they start the game they will realize that there are certain things they have to do as a team and they will build off their prior knowledge and problem-solve to come up with solutions as a team.

Knowledge Dimension- Develop an understanding of disciplinary discourse/practice

To help students build on their knowledge a reflection period will need to be involved in each lesson. This can be done through a group reflection or a more personal reflection as writing in a journal. Prompts may be given by the instructor as to what they should think about as they are reflecting.
